HOMEWORK - Superior Vocal Local
Howdy Folks, let's get down to business. What do you want to change about your landscape? This month, make a plan. Our deciduous trees and shrubs are dormant and often boring this time of year, but now is the time to plan our projects. If you plan to hire a contractor, now would be a great time to meet a few before the spring rush.
MONTH OF MARCH
WATER, PRUNE, SCHEDULE, AND PLAN
-Water trees and shrubs when the ground is bare. 10 gallons per inch of tree trunk diameter, 2 times per month.
-Prune trees, certain shrubs, and ornamental grasses. Trees should be pruned before budbreak to prevent snow damage and infections.
-Remove old debris from the landscape
-Schedule fertilizations of trees and shrubs
-Turf can be aerated and a pre-emergent applied, and fertilized if the ground thaws.
-Plan the additions to your plantscape.
-Find contractors for large projects
-Make a map using GoogleEarth or Procreate to plot your new additions. You might want to hire a designer. Pay attention to how much sun the area gets, and choose plants accordingly. For more winter-interest research planting broadleaf evergreens, native berry shrubs, juniper, pine, spruce, fir, yew and similar.

Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
On Saturday, March 25, 1911, at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in the heart of New York City, a lethal fire broke out on the factory floor, located at the top of the ten-story Asch Building near Washington Square East. Trapping many of the textile workers inside, the fire claimed the lives of one in four employees: more than one hundred women and two dozen men, many of them young, recent immigrants and non-English speakers, perished in the blaze or while jumping from windows to escape. The dangerous working conditions responsible for the fire and its casualties were typical for urban factories, often known as sweatshops, of this period. The largely preventable tragedy and its aftermath helped to galvanize a series of reforms in the working conditions of laborers that continued through the twentieth century.
